Olรก, Mark!

Trema was not used in all countries of Portuguese language. In 2009 there was an agreement among all the countries that spoke the Portuguese language to try to make Portuguese more uniform and close regarding grammar and writing. Some countries that have Portuguese as its official language also have different rules for grammar. So, after this agreement, some rules became the same in those countries, so some modifications have occurred in the Portuguese language in all those countries. Trema not existing anymore was one of those changes. :(

Sincerely,

Marcia

Unfortunately, the trema is no longer used. I wish people would start using the trema again, because it makes pronunciation easier for certain words. Without the trema, Portuguese learners would mispronounce words like lingรผiรงa and pingรผim. Why did the trema stop being used?

Olรก, Ryan,

in the morning we say: 5:30 or 5:30 am. (cinco e meia da manhรฃ)

in the afternoon we read and say: 5:30 pm (cinco e meia da tarde) or 17:30 (cinco e meia da tarde) or dezessete e trinta.

in Brazil, the hours go from 0 to 24h.

Oi Judy,

We are used to ommit or "cut" some syllables when speaking fast in Portuguese.

Usually the last syllable is said with less emphasis.

There's no rule about it. I hope it helps!

OI Paloma,

There are many times in which I do not hear what seems to be written. For example, Ninguรฉm merece.

If the words are said individually, the letters are heard. But when the two are put in a phrase I do not hear the me of the second word. Are sounds intentionally omitted when words quickly follow another?

Obligato,

Judy
