Lesson Transcript

Hi everyone.
Welcome to The Ultimate Portuguese Pronunciation Guide.
In this lesson, you'll learn 10 Portuguese consonant sounds.
These consonant sounds are identical to the ones in English.
So if you know English, they should already be familiar to you.
Are you ready?
Then let's get started!
The first consonant is...
"b
boneca - doll
abóbora - pumpkin
bola - ball"
It sounds like the B in the word 'buy'.
b, b (slowly)
b, b (slowly)
The next consonant is...
"v
violeta - violet
violão - guittar
avião - plana"
It sounds like the V in the word 'Vital'.
v, v (slowly)
v, v (slowly)
The next consonant is...
"d
dedo - finger
ajuda - help
medo - fear"
It sounds like the D in the word 'dad'.
d, d (slowly)
d, d (slowly)
The next consonant is...
"d (in cidaDE)
cidade - city
adivinhar - to guess
dia - day"
It's like the G in the word 'gym'.
d, d (slowly)
d, d (slowly)
The next consonant is...
"f
fase - fase
filho - son
fofo - cute"
It sounds like the F in the word 'find'.
f, f (slowly)
f, f (slowly)
The next consonant is...
"g
gato - cat
agora - now
gago - stutterer"
Like the G in the word 'good'.
g, g (slowly)
g, g (slowly)
The next consonant is...
"rr
jarra
sorriso
derrota"
It's identical to the H in 'hello'.
rr, rr (slowly)
rr, rr (slowly)
The next consonant is...
"c
cor - color
acordar - to wake
coco - coconut"
It sounds like the K in the word 'ski'. Be careful though, because this is an unaspirated sound, meaning there shouldn't be a burst of air when you pronounce this consonant. Place your hand in front of your mouth and pronounce words such as 'kite' or 'keep'. Could you feel the burst of air? Now compare that to the word 'ski'. Notice how the K in the word 'ski' *does not* produce a burst of air. This is how the Portuguese C sound should be pronounced.
c, c (slowly)
c, c (slowly)
The next consonant is...
"l
lua - moon
alugar - to rent
luz - light"
It sounds like the L in the word 'look'.
l, l (slowly)
l, l (slowly)
The final consonant for this lesson is...
"m
mesa - table
amor - love
mamãe - mom"
It sounds like the M in the word 'moon'.
m, m (slowly)
m, m (slowly)

Indeed that's how it sounds like when we use a comparison to English to make it simpler for practicing. Please also check out this audio lesson on the "rr" sound to help you getting more used to it:

Hi Joshua,

Thank you for your comment and feedback.

The red disk at the bottom of the throat signifies the vocal cords.

The blue circle (blue dot) signifies where the focus, ‘place of articulation (contact)', or where the air passes and builds up pressure to create the sound. The place of articulation for a ‘b’ sound for example, would be between the two lips as they come together and touch before creating the sound. In contrast, the place of articulation for a ‘g’ sound, is at the back part of the mouth, where the back of the mouth touches the back part of the tongue.

We will consider your suggestions 😄 Let us know if you have questions.

Regards,

Laura

The illustrations take some getting used to. I wasn't sure what the blue dot was supposed to represent, but it seems as though that's where the origin of the sound should be? I think it may be helpful to see all of the illustrations side by side, along with the sounds and examples in the PDF. By rewinding and pausing the video at each of the illustrations, it seemed to help in my understanding.

Obrigado!

I didn't really think so. I found it more helpful when compared to English sounds and words. More specifically, the tip about not producing air with the c is similar to the k in ski. I also found this type of suggestion helpful in an earlier lesson in regards to the r being similar to how we pronounce the Ts in 'butter'. I get a better sense of how to direct my mouth when I have a physical example.
