HideE aí! Como está?
I often have to ask people to repeat things when I don't understand what they are saying. Our voice recording tool is great for this. It's the big red button up there! ^^
Olรก, Sherri,
it depends on the region we are in. Depending on the city/state you are, people have a certain accent. But both pronunciations are accepted and well understood.
Keep here adding and participating! :)
Sincerely,
Marcia

Sometimes ar is pronounced like ah and other times are. Which is more common in European Portuguese?

can I get these lessons in European Portuguese rather than Brazilian Portuguese
Olรก Mike,
Agradecemos por sua mensagem!
Thank you for your message!
Pronunciation may be a bit tricky at first. A great way of learning it is watching Brazilian movies and series so you can get used to it.
You'll notice that the pronunciation also varies a lot depending on what region of Brazil the speaker is from. For instance, a speaker from Minas Gerais has a very different accent from a speaker from Sรฃo Paulo.
Regarding the word rato: โrโ at the beginning of a word mas an [h] sound like in โhouseโ, as "hรก" - "tรด".
The "r" in "devagar" will only be strongly stressed in some regions of Brazil, but mostly you'll listen to the "dรช" - "vรก" - "ga" - [h].

Hello,
I've been striving to follow pronunciation as closely as possible, while committing as many vocab words and lesson expressions to memory. A problem I keep running into is when the sample audio pronounces the "r" at the end of a word, when I think it's supposed to be silent, or produce the (breathy) "ha" sound.
For instance, Braden pronounces the ending "r" the same way the Pronunciation Series, instructs, which states, "An -r at the beginning or end of a word or before a consonant makes the same sound as the - rr. The word for "rat" is rato, the word for "tree" is รกrvore, and the word for "walk" is andar." As with the vocab in this lesson, most all the words she pronounces contradict the pronunciation lesson. Even "devagar" is pronounced "gee-va-gar"!
What's going on here? It makes it confusing, and hard to memorize correct pronunciation. Furthermore, makes me apprehensive to trust the recorded pronunciations if it's teaching incorrectly. Entendeu? "(Do you) understand?"
Please advise. Obrigado. "Thank You."
Mike
