Welcome to whiteboard lessons.
Today, we’re going to talk about languages; in particular, we’re going to discuss languages abilities.
Okay, first, let’s see the vocabulary.
First one is...
inglês
inglês means "English"
First, pay attention that we don't have capital letter for languages in Portuguese. Ok? Only in English.
japonês
japonês means "Japanese"
português
português is this beautiful language, "Portuguese"
francês
francês is "French"
alemão
Here we have a nasal sound.
alemão
alemão means "German"
espanhol means "Spanish"
russo
russo means "Russian"
chinês
chinês means "Chinese"
And last one is...
italiano
italiano means "Italian"
So let's say them all again.

Ok, now that we've seen the vocabulary, let's see the dialogue.
Ok, here's today's dialogue.
Você fala inglês?
Sim, eu falo.
Você fala inglês?
"Do you speak English?"
Sim, eu falo.
"Yes I do."
As you can see, there is this pattern - Você fala...? "Do you speak?"
Let's see it again.
Você fala [Language]? "Do you speak [Language]?"
Você means "you" and fala means "speak"
So we don't need to add the "do" as we do in English.
Você fala... "you speak..."
"Portuguese?" Você fala português?
"Do you speak [Language]?"
Você fala [Language]?
And the answer can be - Sim, eu falo. "Yes, I speak" literally, but we translate it as "Yes, I do."
Or, Não, eu não falo. "No, I no speak." That's the literal translation but we translate it in English as "No, I don't."
Ok, let's see some more examples.
Here we have - Você fala português?
Você fala português?
"Do you speak Portuguese?"
Or,
Você fala alemão?
"Do you speak German?"
Você fala português?
Sim, eu falo.
Você fala alemão?
Não, eu não falo.
We do learn English at school in Brazil, but very few people are fluent in it. We also do learn some Spanish, but again, we're not fluent in it. So it will always be helpful to know Portuguese when you go to Brazil to be able to communicate with people.
