Oi gente todo o mundo, Paloma here. Welcome to Portuguese weekly words, Holiday edition. The holiday for today is New Year’s Day.
1. Ano Novo "New Year"
Since Christmas is a holiday that people spend with their family, many people spend new years with their friends. They usually go to the beach with a great place to spend new year, since new year is summer.
Eu vou pra praia no Ano Novo. "I'll go to the beach on New Year."
2. cor da roupa "clothing color"
So this is a very important point on Brazilian New Year, we usually wear white for peace, but many people use yellow to get some money for next year, or green for prosperity, and yeah each color means something.
Eu vou pesquisar o siginificado da cor da roupa do Ano Novo. "I'll search about the meaning of the clothing color for New Year."
3. figo, romã, lentilha, uva "fig, pomegranate, lentil, grapes”
All those fruits are symbols of prosperity, so many people are very superstitious about it, and they eat seven of each during new year’s eve.
Minha mãe já comprou o figo e a romã para o Ano Novo. "My mom already bought the fig and the pomegranate for the New Year."
4. Corrida Internacional de São Silvestre "International São Silvestre Race"
This is kind of a marathon that happens in São Paulo on January 1st, and it's probably the most famous race in Brazil.
Esse ano, eu vou correr na corrida de São Silvestre. "This year, I'm going to run on São Silvestre Race."
5. fogos de artifício "fireworks"
At I said before, many people go to the beach during New Year, and one of the most famous place to go is Copacabana beach in Rio. There are the most famous fireworks in brazil.
Esse ano, eu quero ir para Copacabana ver os fogos de artifício. "This year, I want to go to Copacabana beach to see the fireworks."
