The holiday today is Independence Day.
Dia da Independência "Independence Day"
Brazilian Independence Day is on September 7th. It is celebrated nationwide. It’s a day with lots of parades in different cities. A big parade in Brasilia with the president of the country.
Dia 7 de setembro nós vamos pra praia. "On September 7th we're going to the beach."
That’s usually what people do. They just go to a place for resting, like beaches or farms. And they just enjoy that time with their family or friends.
colonizado “colonized”
So Brazilian independence was from Portugal. And Brazil was “colonizado” by Portugal. was colonized by Portugal.
O Brasil foi colonizado por Portugal. "Brazil was colonized by Portugal."
Dia do Fico “Stand Day” or “I’ll Stay Day”
“O Dia do Fico” was in January 9th, 1822. It was the day that Dom Pedro said I’ll stay in this country and rule this country. And it was the first step towards separating Brazilian colony of Portugal and starting to get our own independence here.
O Dia do Fico aconteceu em janeiro de 1822. "The Stand Day happened on January 1822."
Independência ou Morte “Independence or Death”
This is the famous phrase that Pedro the first said when he proclaimed our independence.

Pau-brasil “Brazilian wood”
“Pau-brasil” was the most important good in Brazil when the Portuguese arrived. And that’s why they stayed here, because “pau-brasil” was used to get the paint for dyeing clothes in the past.
O pau-brasil deu nome para o nosso país. "The Brazilian wood gave the name of our country."
Yeah, nowadays “pau-brasil” is almost extinguished, but you can find it in very remote forests in Brazil.
