Braden: This conversation takes place in the evening on a TV show and it's between Giselda Bundchen and the host.
Thássia: What's the formality level?
Braden: Well, it's a TV show so it's casual but not completely relaxed.

English Host: Let’s hear the conversation one time slowly.

Apresentador: Bem vindos de volta ao nosso show! Estamos recebendo Giselda Bundchen em nosso palco hoje. Ela já falou sobre sua infância e agora eu queria saber...do que mais você sente falta daquela época?
Braden: Welcome back to your show! We have Giselda Bundchen on our stage today. She already talked about her childhood and now I want to know...what do you miss the most from those times?
Giselda: Ahh, eu sinto falta de quando fazíamos churrasco com a família toda reunida, quando todos os primos íamos para a casa da minha avó, era aquela farra! Os primos mais velhos contavam histórias para os mais novos e eles morriam de medo.
Braden: Ahh, I miss when we'd barbeque with the whole family together. When all my cousins and I would go to my grandmother's house, it was a party! My older cousins would tell stories to the younger ones and they got scared to death.
Apresentador: (haha) E você também tinha medo?
Braden: (haha) And were you scared too?
Giselda: Eu MORRIA de medo, mas não deixava ninguém perceber (risos) é...mas no final dormíamos todos com a luz acesa.
Braden: I was deathly afraid, but I never let anyone know. But in the end, we all slept with the light on.
Apresentador: De qual história voce tinha mais medo?
Braden: Which story scared you the most?
Giselda: A mula-sem-cabeça com certeza.
Braden: The headless mule, for sure.
Apresentador: (haha) Muito assustadora mesmo... Mas, ficaram boas lembranças, não?
Braden: (haha) That certainly is a scary one. But, they're good memories, right?
Giselda: ah sim, claro! Com certeza! "Éramos felizes E sabíamos."
Braden: Yes, of course! Certainly! "We were happy and we knew it."
(musiquinha)

Apresentador: Não saia daí, depois do intervalo a top número um do mundo fará mais revelações surpreendentes. Não mude de canal!
Braden: Don't leave where you are, after the break we'll have the number one top model in the world make more surprising revelations. Don't change the channel!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Peter always does a little review about the previous lessons. explain what you are thinking about the storyline in the lesson, so the students can follow and participate - don't make them guess.
Braden: Did you notice how careful we were to avoid any copyright infringement!
Thássia: Well you have to be these days! Celebrities can be so fiesty. Even more so when they are on television.
Braden: For a long time, most of Brazil only had two television channels - Globo and SBT, right?
Thássia: Right. Today, there are several others and if you pay for cable there are well over a hundred.
Braden: But Globo and SBT are the most watched and make the most money.
Thássia: Yep. These two channels have competing program schedules for movies and the best cartoons but what they compete about the most is futebol.
Braden: Who gets what tournament, what times, is as more important than winning the rights to the college football bowls in the USA.
Thássia: The entire country stops (for a month) for the World Cup. That’s roughly 200,000,000 people watching just one show which you can guess is huge for ratings.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Braden: Let's have a closer look at the usuage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Thássia: The first word we’ll look at is “sentir falta.” Sentir falta literally translates to “feel absence,” but it is used to mean “to miss.”
Braden: In the dialogue we saw the speaker saying eu sinto falta de quando fazíamos churrasco com a família toda reunida to mean “I miss when we’d barbecue with the whole family together.”
Thássia: Next we’ll look at “aquela farra” Aquela farra literally translates to “that binge.” But, in the dialogue it was used to refer to a funny situation that everyone knows or can imagine.
Braden: Here the speaker is talking about many cousins having fun together and she supposes that everyone can imagine that because everyone has lived or seen something like that; it is commonplace.
Thássia: last we’ll look at “fazer revelação.” “Fazer revelação” literally translates to “make revelation,” but in the dialogue it was used to mean “to reveal (something).”
Braden: Portuguese has the verb revelar which also means “to reveal” but here fazer revelação was used to give a sensasionalist tone.

Lesson focus

Braden: What’s the grammar point focusing on in this lesson
Thássia: The focus of this lesson is the imperfect past with -er and -ir verbs. In the dialogue, we heard the phrase “...eles morriam de medo.”
Braden: Which we translated as "...they were scared to death.” the verb morriam is an example of an -er verb in the imperfect past tense.
Thássia: Just to review from our previous lesson, the imperfect past tense is the second past tense in Portuguese. The imperfect past tense, 1. tells what was happening.
Braden: 2. recalls what used to happen.
Thássia: 3. describes a physical, mental, or emotional state in the past.
Braden: and 4. tells the time in the past to set the stage upon which another action was played.
Thássia: So, regular -er and -ir verbs conjugate identically in the imperfect tense.
Braden: some example sentences are “Chovia às seis horas.” – “It was raining at six o’clock.”
and Eu bebia muito leite antes de vir para o Brasil. – “I drank a lot of milk before I came to Brazil.”
Thássia: Ele dormia até tarde todos os dias. – Literally this translates to “He slept until late all the days.” but it means, “He slept in every day.”
Braden: So, for both -er and -ir verbs, the conjugation to the imperfect past tens is the same. So, let’s look at the -er verb beber. How do I say I used to drink?
Thássia: eu bebia
Braden: and you used to drink?
Thássia: você bebia
Braden: and he/she/it used to drink?
Thássia: ele or ela bebia
Braden: and we used to drink?
Thássia: nós bebíamos
Braden: and y’all used to drink?
Thássia: vocês bebiam
Braden: and they used to drink?
Thássia: eles or elas bebiam.
Braden: Thanks you for that Thássia, How about the -ir verb dormir? . How do I say I used to sleep?
Thássia: eu dormia
Braden: and you used to sleep?
Thássia: você dormia
Braden: and he/she/it used to sleep?
Thássia: ele or ela dormia
Braden: and we used to sleep?
Thássia: nós dormíamos
Braden: and y’all used to sleep?
Thássia: vocês dormiam
Braden: and they used to sleep?
Thássia: eles or elas dormiam.
Braden: Sweet.
