Sílvia: Hi, my name is Sílvia, and I am joined here by Braden.
Braden: Hello, everyone and welcome back to PortuguesePOD101.com
Sílvia: What are we learning today?
Thássia: So Braden, please tell us what we will be learning in this lesson.
Braden: In this lesson, you'll be learning how to conjugate regular -ar verbs into the imperfect past.
Thássia: Where does this conversation take place and who is it between?
Braden: This conversation takes place in the evening on a TV show and it's between Giselda Bundchen and the host.
Thássia: What's the formality level?
Braden: Well, it's a TV show so it's casual but not completely relaxed
Thássia: Let's listen to the conversation.

Giselda Bundchen: Boa noite! Boa noite pessoal!

Apresentador: Giselda, você ainda se assusta com o carinho do público, ou você já sabe lidar bem com isso?
Giselda Bundchen: Ah, é sempre bom receber o carinho do público. Eu vejo isso como reconhecimento do meu trabalho.
Apresentador: E muita coisa mudou na sua vida desde que você se tornou uma top, como foi sua infância?
Giselda Bundchen: Minha infância foi muito legal, foi muito divertida. Eu tenho muitos irmãos então a gente sempre aprontava muito.

Giselda Bundchen: Muito! Eu pulava corda, andava de bicicleta, explorava a vizinhança, passava horas brincando...Minha mãe ficava louca!

Braden: And many things changed in your life since you became a Top Model. What was your childhood like?
Giselda Bundchen: Minha infância foi muito legal, foi muito divertida. Eu tenho muitos irmãos então a gente sempre aprontava muito.
Braden: My childhood was very cool and very fun. I have many siblings so we were always getting into trouble.
Apresentador: Então você foi uma criança levada.
Braden: So you were a trouble maker?
Giselda Bundchen: Muito! Eu pulava corda, andava de bicicleta, explorava a vizinhança, passava horas brincando...Minha mãe ficava louca!
Braden: Very much so! I used to jump rope, ride bikes, explore the neighborhood, spend hours playing... My mother used to go crazy!

Braden: Ahh I had a very happy childhood close to my family.

Braden: Brazilian television is very similar to television programs anywhere else.
Thássia: There are set start times for each program, minimum and maximum lengths for each program, and commercials in between.
Braden: There are talk shows, dramas, soap operas, news, political advertisements, cartoons, and full length movies.
Thássia: In the afternoon, there tend to be a mixture of talk shows, and movies.
Braden: Globo, the largest television company in Brazil, has the sessão da tarde which is a full length movie that’s always inedito. Inedito means “never before seen.”

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Braden: Let's have a closer look at the usuage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Thássia: The first word we’ll look at is “carinho.” Carinho doesn’t have a direct translation to English but can mean “caress,” “affection,” “gentleness,” and many other things.
Braden: But the general idea is any “action or attitude of affection.” For example, hugs and kisses are an acts of carinho. Brazilians use this word a lot.
Thássia: Next we’ll look at the word “reconhecimento” Reconhecimento translates to “recognition,” but in the dialogue it was used as “approval”.
Braden: The speaker said Eu vejo isso como reconhecimento do meu trabalho, which we translated as “I see it as recognition of my work.” Here reconhecimento was used to mean that not only was her work noticed by the public, but that the public also approved of her work.
Thássia: Aprontar has two basic meanings - “to get ready,” or “to prepare” and “to do something naughty”. In the dialogue, aprontar was used to mean “to be an energetic child.”
Braden: Levado can be used to mean two different things - “to be taken,” “to be driven” or “frisky,” “naughty.” Here it was used to mean “playful,” and “energetic.”
Thássia: Explorar is the Portuguese word for “to explore” an in the dialogue it is used in that way. The “X” in explorar can be pronounced as a “S” sound or as a “SH” sound, but not as a “ks” sound. It can also mean “to take advantage of” or “to exploit” someone or something.

Lesson focus
Braden: Let’s take a look at the grammar point.
Thássia: The focus of this lesson is Imperfect past -ar. In the dialogue, we heard “Eu pulava corda, andava de bicicleta, explorava a vizinhança, passava horas brincando”
Braden: We translated this as – "I used to jump rope, ride bikes, explore the neighbourhood, spend hours playing"
Thássia: These are examples of the imperfect past tens in Portuguese.
Braden: The imperfect past tense is the second past tense in Portuguese. The imperfect past tense, 1. tells what was happening.
Thássia: 2. recalls what used to happen.
Braden: 3. describes a physical, mental, or emotional state in the past.
Thássia: 4. tells the time in the past to set the stage upon which another action was played.
Braden: so we have a lot of sample sentences.
Thássia: Ele cantava no coro. – He used to sing in the choir.
Braden: Elas jogavam futebol no segundo grau. – They played soccer in High School.
Thássia: Nós estávamos no cinema. – We were at the movies.
Braden: Antes, eu falava muito bem o português. – Before, I used to speak Portuguese well.
Thássia: In the PDF we have a chart showing the formation of the imperfect past tense for regular -ar verbs.
Braden: I don’t want to sound like a salesman but especially for verb conjugations, you really need to see the tables we make. first, they’re pretty sweet and second they are packed with information. We are going to go through the imperfect past tense of regular -ar verbs.
Thássia: And we’ll use the verb estar as our example. –
Braden: so how do I say I used to be
Thássia: eu estava
Braden: you used to be
Thássia: você estava
Braden: he/she/it used to be
Thássia: ele or ela estava
Braden: we used to be
Thássia: nós estavamos
Braden: y’all used to be
Thássia: vocês estavam
Braden: they used to be
Thássia: eles or elas estavam
Braden: Awesome. Okay so some examples from this dialogue.
Thássia: Eu tenho muitos irmãos então a gente sempre aprontava muito. – “I have many siblings so we were always getting into trouble.”
Braden: and Minha mãe ficava louca! – “My mother used to go crazy!”
Thássia: Again in the PDF we have a table that shows the preterit and the imperfect next to each other and how they change the meanings.
