Thanks for the compliment! We're glad you're enjoying it!

What kind of Brazilian music do you like?

There's a few bands I really enjoy. "Banda Casaca" is one. They're a bit less famous than ones like "Capital Inicial" or "Jota Quest." Casaca is what many Brazilians call "música de raíz" or "roots music."

Pretty much anything from Roberto Carlos or Gilberto Gil is great as well.

I found myself listening to "Skank" quite a bit as well. They have a song called "Alí" that's just awesome.

Are you familiar with some of the genres like axé and frevo?

Sure!

Frevo is strictly música nordestina. In Recife, where frevo originates, it's mostly connected with Carnaval in the same way that Samba is in Rio or São Paulo. It's upbeat and kind of playful. Here's a YouTube link I like: http://youtu.be/Ydr848aAqz4

Axé is quite different. To me, it has a much more tropical kind of sound. Lot's of percussion, typically from wood instruments, and singing. YouTube doesn't have as many Axé videos as it does Samba and Frevo and many of the Axé you'll see there are from Spanish cultures that have adapted Axé in their own way. In my opinion, Axé from Brazil is the best though, especially Axé from Bahia.

As I'm a real newbie, that's given me loads to explore.

I'm glad to help!

First off, I love that book! Second I agree. Portuguese speakers can understand Spanish very easily. I actually passed the Spanish CLEP test without ever studying Spanish. (except for slangs and regionalisms, those can be hard even for native Spanish speakers)

I tend to get blank stares when I speak Portuguese to Spanish speakers. The issue is pronunciation. Portuguese pronunciation is much more complicated (roughly 3 times more complicated).

Também gosto muito da música dela. Bem leve e suave. Ela canta com coração.

(I also like her music a lot. Very light and suave. She sings with her heart.)
