INTRODUCTION
In this lesson we’ll introduce you to a crucial phrase for all you travelers who are interested in learning more about the tourist attractions you’re going to visit. Learning about the history and the cultural significance of places you visit can be just as rewarding as seeing them. So now we’ll cover the phrase “Do you have an English information guide?”
GRAMMAR POINT
In Portuguese, “Do you have an English information guide?” is:
Tem um guia em inglês?
Let’s break it down:
Tem um gui-a em in-glês?
Once more:
Tem um guia em inglês?
The first word, Tem is a verb that is translated as “do you have”.
(slow) Tem.
Tem.
Next we have um guia which means “a guide”.
(slow) um guia.
Um guia.
Next we have em inglês which means “in English”.
(slow) em in-glês.
em inglês.
All together, we have:
(slow) Tem um guia em inglês?
Tem um guia em inglês?
This sentence refers to a pamphlet at the entrance of the museum.
To ask for a guide in a different language, we can just replace the word for “English” with the word for any other language and it works just fine. Let’s try with “French”
“Do you have a French information guide?” is
Tem um guia em francês?
(slow) Tem um guia em francês?
Tem um guia em francês?
The only thing that changes is the language you are looking for. In this case it’s francês, French.
(slow) francês.
francês.
Now let’s try with a German guide! In Portuguese German will be alemão.
(slow) a-le-mão.
alemão.
“Do you have a German information guide?” is
Tem um guia em alemão?
(slow) Tem um gui-a em a-le-mão?
Tem um guia em alemão?
Piece of cake!
