INTRODUCTION
In this lesson we're going to take a trip to the post office. The post office is Correios.
GRAMMAR POINT
(slow) Cor-rei-os
Correios.
In this lesson, we're going to work on getting your postcards, letters, and packages home. The expression we need to accomplish this is: "I would like to send this to..." and then the desired destination. For this lesson, we'll use France. In Portuguese, “I would like to send this to France" is:
Eu queria enviar isto para França.
Let’s break it down:
(slow) Eu que-ria en-vi-ar is-to para Fran-ça.
Once more:
Eu queria enviar isto para França.
The first part, eu queria, is translated as “I would like”
(slow) eu que-ria
eu queria
Next we have enviar, which in English will be “to send”.
(slow) En-vi-ar
enviar.
Then we have isto, which means “this”.
(slow) is-to.
isto.
Next we have para which literally means “to”
(slow) pa-ra
para
And at the end we have the name of the country, in our case França.
(slow) Fran-ça.
França.
All together, we have
(slow)Eu que-ria en-vi-ar is-to para Fran-ça.
Eu queria enviar isto para França.
Literally, this means “I would like to send this to France.”
Let's look at the other words. We were talking about packages, letters, and postcards, so let’s try to send a postcard!
“Postcard” in Portuguese is Cartão postal.
(slow) Car-tão pos-tal.
Cartão postal.
“I would like to send this postcard to France” in Portuguese is
Eu queria enviar este cartão postal para França.
Let’s break it down:
(slow) Eu queria en-vi-ar es-te car-tão pos-tal pa-ra Fran-ça.
Once more:
Eu queria enviar este cartão postal para França.
Two things have changed in this sentence. First we added the words cartão postal which mean "post card." Because we added cartão postal, we needed to change isto to este. Este is the masculine form of isto.
Este cartão postal means "this postcard."
(slow) Este cartão postal.
Este cartão postal.
Now let’s try “letter”, which in Portuguese is carta.
(slow) Car-ta.
Carta.
“This letter” is:
(slow) es-ta car-ta
esta carta
By substituting this into the first sentence, we can get:
“I would like to send this letter to France” or
Eu queria enviar esta carta para França.
(slow) Eu queria en-vi-ar es-ta car-ta pa-ra Fran-ça.
Let’s hear the whole phrase one more time:
Eu queria enviar esta carta para França.
Now let’s try to send a package. In Portuguese, “I would like to send this package to France” is:
Eu queria enviar este pacote para França.
(slow) Eu queria en-vi-ar es-te pa-co-te pa-ra Fran-ça.
“Package” in Portuguese is pacote.
(slow) Pa-co-te.
Pacote.
It’s a masculine noun, so we use este. Este pacote.
Altogether we have:
Eu Queria enviar este pacote para França.
Now the package requires a closer look, which we’ll address in the next lesson.
