INTRODUCTION
In the previous lesson, we covered how to ask where things are. In this lesson, we’ll introduce you to another useful phrase for finding the place you need. This lesson’s phrase is “Is there a (place) near here?”
GRAMMAR POINT
First, we need a place. Let’s use the word hospital, which means “hospital"
In Portuguese, “Is there a hospital near here?” is
Há um hospital por aqui?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) Há um hos-pi-tal por a-qui?
Once again:
Há um hospital por aqui?
The first word, há, can be translated in English as “there is”
(slow) há.
há.
Next comes um hospital which means (“a hospital”).
(slow) um hos-pi-tal
um hospital
After that comes por aqui, these two words together mean “around” or “near here”
(slow) Por a-qui.
Por aqui.
All together, it’s
Há um hospital por aqui?
Do not forget to add the polite expression com licença (“excuse me”) at the beginning.
Replace the word um hospital with any other word and your question will look good.
Imagine that you need to withdraw some money from your bank account.
In Portuguese, “Is there an ATM near here?” is
Há uma caixa automática por aqui?
The only word that changes is the thing you are looking for, in this case caixa automática.
(slow) cai-xa au-to-má-ti-ca.
Caixa automática.
(slow) Há u-ma cai-xa au-to-má-ti-ca por a-qui?
Há uma caixa automática por aqui?
Another place you'll probably need to find is an exchange office, so you can get some cash in the local currency. Just exchange caixa automática for casa de câmbio.
(slow) ca-sa de câm-bio
casa de câmbio
So the whole phrase would be:
Há uma casa de câmbio por aqui?
(slow) Há u-ma ca-sa de câm-bi-o por a-qui?
Há uma casa de câmbio por aqui?
