INTRODUCTION
In this lesson, we’ll cover an extremely important phrase: “Where is the bathroom?”.
GRAMMAR POINT
In Portuguese “Where is the bathroom?” is:
Onde fica a casa de banho? Most of the time, this expression is used when you are invited to someone’s home.
Let’s break it down:
(slow) On-de fi-ca a ca-sa de ba-nho?
Once more:
Onde fica a casa de banho?
Let’s take a closer look at that. The first word, onde , means “where.”
(slow) On-de.
Onde.
This is followed by fica, which is the present form of the verb “to stay” or "to be located."
(slow) fi-ca.
Fica.
And last we have a casa de banho. The word, a casa de banho, means “the bathroom.”
(slow) A ca-sa de ba-nho.
A casa de banho.
Let’s hear the whole question one more time.
(slow) On-de fi-ca a casa de banho?
Onde fica a casa de banho?
If you are looking for the ladies’ room, just take the phrase we just learned, Onde fica a casa de banho?, and add at the end the phrase das senhoras. It will sound like this:
Onde fica a casa de banho das senhoras?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) On-de fi-ca a ca-sa de ba-nho das se-nho-ras?
Once more:
Onde fica a casa de banho das senhoras?
das senhoras means "of the ladies’"
(slow) das se-nho-ras
das senhoras
Let’s repeat the whole question again.
(slow) On-de fi-ca a ca-sa de ba-nho das se-nho-ras?
Once more:
Onde fica a casa de banho das senhoras?
If you are looking for the mens’ room, just replace the word das senhoras meaning “ladies’” with dos senhores (men’s).
(slow) dos se-nho-res
dos senhores
So the sentence will be:
Onde fica a casa de banho dos senhores?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) On-de fi-ca a ca-sa de ba-nho dos se-nho-res?
Once more:
Onde fica a casa de banho dos senhores?
Let’s hear both of the sentences one more time:
Onde fica a casa de banho das senhoras?
Onde fica a casa de banho dos senhores?
There might be restrooms in Portugal where words are written on the doors. In which case, all you have to do is read the words. Let’s learn them.
The word senhoras means “women.”
(slow) senhoras
senhoras
The word senhores is for “men”.
(slow) se-nho-res
senhores
In Portugal, it may not always be easy to find a bathroom. Especially if you are on the street you will definitely want to ask “Where is the nearest toilet?” In Portuguese that is translated as:
Onde fica a casa de banho mais perto?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) On-de fi-ca a ca-sa de ba-nho mais per-to?
Once more:
Onde fica a casa de banho mais perto?
The new words in this sentence are mais perto which translate in English as “the nearest” or "the closest".
(slow) ma-is per-to
mais perto
Let’s hear the whole sentence again.
Onde fica a casa de banho mais perto?

Hi Linda,

Thank you for posting.

In the vocabulary section you can listen to the audio in the normal and slow (0.5x) speed, but you can also adjust the lesson's audio speed by clicking on the ‘1x’ button next to the volume control icon (you can choose either 0.75x or 0.5x to slow it down). Then, it's practice. Please listen to the target words a few more times and also try to practice it by using our [voice recording] feature in the [Dialogue] and/or [Vocabulary] sections. You can adjust your pronunciation to the native speaker's until you master it :)

PS: The voice recording tool is developed by Flash, and you need access to the site on your PC or Mac to enjoy the feature.

Also, you can add any words from the vocabulary to your Word bank or Flashcard Deck for further practice.

In case of any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We’ll be glad to help!

Sincerely,

It is hard for me to hear the difference between senhoras and senhores even when speaking slowly.
