|In today’s lesson, we’ll introduce you to some phrases that hopefully you won’t have to use. Accidents happen. And knowing how to call for help could save a life.
|In Portuguese, "Help!" is Socorro!
|Let's break it down by syllable: so-cor-ro
|Now, let's hear it once again: socorro
|This word, socorro, means "help."
|Let's break down this word and hear it one more time: socorro
|In Portuguese, you can call for the police by saying polícia.
|Let's break it down by syllable: po-lí-ci-a
|Now, here it is once again: polícia
|This word polícia means "police."
|Let's break down this word and hear it one more time: po-lí-ci-a
|The phone number for the police in Brazil is 190. In Brazil, they can't track who calls them by phone number, so you need to be able to tell them where you are. Simply giving the street names is usually enough, but I suggest having someone who speaks Portuguese make the call because they could require quite a bit of information.
|Now, I should warn you that muggings happen in Brazil, more commonly than in the United States. But most people get mugged more because of carelessness than because Brazil is abnormally dangerous. If you pay attention and take care of yourself, you probably won't have any problems.
|Remember, also, that Socorro can also be a woman's name. I wouldn't be surprised if you met several women with this name during your visit. But don't worry, when you really do need help and ask for Socorro, they will understand immediately and act quickly.
|Okay. To close out today's lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase, and you're responsible for saying it aloud. You'll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so boa sorte!
|"Help!" - Socorro
|"police" - polícia
|All right. That's going to do it for today. Remember to stop by PortuguesePod101.com and pick up the accompanying PDF. If you stop by, be sure to leave us a comment.
