| Today, we’re going to talk about your hobbies in Portuguese. |
| Okay. First, Let’s take a look at the dialogue. |
| Qual é o seu hobby? |
| Qual é o seu hobby? (enunciated) |
| Pay attention to the intonation at the end that makes a question in Portuguese. |
| Qual é o seu hobby? |
| "What’s your hobby?" |
| Eu gosto de acampar. |
| Eu gosto de acampar. "I like to camp." |
| So let’s see a few more verbs and phrases you can use with the same pattern. |
| acampar |
| acampar (enunciated) |
| Acampar means "to camp." |
| ler |
| ler "to read" |
| cantar |
| cantar "to sing" |
| tirar fotos |
| tirar fotos (enunciated) |
| Tirar fotos means "to take pictures." |
| ouvir música |
| ouvir música (enunciated) |
| ouvir música "to listen to music" |
| jogar futebol |
| Jogar futebol means "to play soccer." |
| Our last one is… |
| tocar violino |
| tocar violino (enunciated) |
| Tocar violino means "to play the violin." |
| So as you can see, we have different verbs to mean to play a sport and to play an instrument. |
| To play a sport, that’s jogar. |
| And to play an instrument is tocar. |
| jogar futebol “play soccer” |
| And tocar violino. |
| You don’t say jogar violino. |
| And you also don’t say tocar futebol. |
| That makes no sense in Portuguese. |
| Okay, so let’s review the pattern for today. That’s… |
| Eu gosto de… |
| Eu gosto de… and the [hobby]. |
| "I like [hobby]." |
| Remember that in Portuguese, we always use de after gosto or gustar. |
| Eu gosto de… and then the verb or the action. |
| For example… |
| Eu gosto de jogar futebol. |
| Eu gosto de jogar futebol. |
| "I like to play soccer." |
| And… |
| Eu gosto de tocar violino. |
| Eu gosto de tocar violino. |
| "I like to play the violin." |
| Also something interesting is that in Portuguese, we don’t say de violino, tocar de violino. We usually just say tocar violino. |
| So if someone asks you… |

| You can say… |
| Eu gosto de… |
| acampar. |
| Eu gosto de jogar futebol. |
| Eu gosto de tocar violino. |
| Eu gosto de ler. |
| Eu gosto de acampar. |
| Eu gosto de tirar fotos. |
| Eu gosto de ouvir música. |
| Other popular sports include “swimming” or natação, “volleyball” or voleibol, “judo” judô, and other martial arts, as the famous capoeira. |
