Peter: Alright, so why is your reason so important for motivation?
Chigusa: Peter, wouldn’t you say that reasons are tied in with goals?
Peter: That’s right, Chigusa. Listeners, more often than not, your “why” is directly related to your goal...
Chigusa: Like... “I want to live in the country where the language is spoken.”
Peter: ...or “I want to understand the culture, movies, and music.”
Chigusa: But sometimes, it can also be something simple like... “I’m just interested in it.”
Peter: Exactly, but regardless of your reason, by knowing it and writing it down...
Chigusa: ...you’ll be able to maintain your motivation and keep going. Is that what you do, Peter?
Peter: You got it, Chigusa. Right now, I’m learning French, and I keep my reasons and goals written down, sitting in front of me, so I can always remind myself.
Chigusa: And does that really work for you?
Peter: Definitely. I personally prefer write down “to-do” lists in a notebook. Meetings I have to go to. Emails I have to send. And my language goals are in there too. Simply putting your goals down on paper probably increases your chance of success by 90% Chigusa, 90%...
Chigusa: Wow.... and reviewing the goals keeps you focused on them, right?
Peter: Exactly. Because I write it down and review it, I think about it more. And thoughts lead to action, so I end up studying almost daily.
Chigusa: I see! So listeners, what’s your reason for learning?
Peter: And if you’re interested in what other language learners are saying...
Chigusa: We’ve asked... and here are the Top 10 Reasons for Learning a Language.
Peter: Number One: I love the culture and the people who speak the language.
Chigusa: This is a popular answer, especially amongst our Japanese and Korean learners.
Peter: Number Two: I want to understand my favorite songs, movies, and TV shows. Also a very popular reason!
Chigusa: That’s right. And listeners – songs, movies, and shows are great ways to immerse yourself in the language!
Peter: If you’re spending your time learning AND also immersing yourself, you’re guaranteed to learn faster.
Chigusa: Number Three: It's a beautiful language.
Peter: You know, sometimes, an answer as simple as that is good enough.
Chigusa: Yeah, it means you have a genuine interest in the language itself.
Peter: Number Four: My family comes from a place where the language is spoken.
Chigusa: The fifth one is similar: I want to speak to my partner's family in their language.
Peter: I can definitely relate. I learned Chinese to be able to speak with my wife’s family.
Chigusa: Oh, that’s nice. The sixth one is also in line with these: I am learning the language to impress someone.
Peter: Listeners, are you learning a language to impress or talk to someone special?
Chigusa: Definitely a powerful motivator.
Peter: Agreed, Chigusa. That was one of my reasons once too! The seventh one is... Ah, this one, you should say...
Chigusa: Yes, yes, yes, please let me say it! I love traveling!
Peter: Number Eight: I live... or... want to live in a country that speaks the language. This one is also very powerful and why I mastered Japanese.
Chigusa: Number Nine: I just love learning languages!
Peter: What’s great about this is...if you’ve learned one language... some say, it’s EASIER to learn another.
Chigusa: Because you learn HOW to learn a language, right?
Peter: Exactly, Chigusa. If you learn one, you develop the habits and know-how to master another.
Chigusa: And the last one, Number Ten: I want to open my mind and become more international.
Peter: So, Chigusa, I think most people learn for love, for family, for traveling ...
Chigusa:...or for self improvement!
