Lesson Transcript

Oi, meu nome é Paloma. Hi everybody! I’m Paloma.
Welcome to PortuguesePod101.com’s “Português em Três Minutos”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Portuguese.
In the last lesson, we learned the use of the verb estar, which means “to be” in Portuguese.
In this lesson, we are going to learn one basic usage of the verb ter, which means “to have”. We will use this verb to talk about your age.
It’s normal for young people in Brazil to ask each other’s age. Of course, it might be risky to pose it to people over 25!
If someone asks you Quantos anos você tem?, they are asking “How old are you?” in Portuguese.
[slowly] Quantos anos você tem?
In formal Portuguese, it would be - Quantos anos o senhor tem?
[slowly] Quantos anos o senhor tem?
Now you have to answer with your age! In Portuguese you use the verb ter, “to have”.
Here are some examples.
“I am 18” - Eu tenho dezoito anos.
“I am 20” - Eu tenho vinte anos.
“I am 25” - Eu tenho vinte e cinco anos.
“I am 40” - Eu tenho quarenta anos.
Can you see what is happening here? For example, in the sentence Eu tenho dezoito anos., “I am 18”
Eu tenho means “I have”. Tenho is ter conjugated for the pronoun Eu.
Dezoito is “18”. We learned about numbers back in lessons 6 and 7.
And then we just add Anos, which means “years”.
[slowly] Eu tenho dezoito anos.
Sometimes Brazilian people won’t ask your age directly, but instead, will ask your birth year.
So you might hear this question in an informal situation -
De que ano você é?
[slowly] De que ano você é?
This literally means “Of which year are you?”
You just have to answer using the two last figures of your birth year -
Eu sou de oitenta e nove. which literally means “I am of 89.”
Now it’s time for Paloma’s Point.
Were you born in the year 2000? Sorry, you can’t say that you are of zero-zero. You have to say the entire year. Eu sou de dois mil. This also applies for those born after this year.
In this lesson, we learned how to talk about your age using ter and your birth date. Next time we’ll learn how to use this verb for talking about possessions. Do you know how to say that you have a car?
I'll be waiting to tell you in the next Português em Três Minutos lesson!
Até mais!

Olá Gabriel,

Thank you for posting!

Just a few notes:

1) "I like (...)" in Portuguese is "Eu gosto (...)";

2) "marathon" in Portuguese is "maratona";

Please check out our Portuguese Dictionary regarding the correct writing for new vocabulary :)
