Lesson Transcript

Oi, meu nome é Paloma. Hi everybody! I’m Paloma.
Welcome to PortuguesePod101.com’s “Português em Três Minutos”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Portuguese.
In the last lesson, we learned how to talk about our nationality. In this lesson, we will learn another verb which can also be translated as "to be" in English. It is the verb estar.
This verb is used to talk about location and it indicates the momentary state of things or people, to say things like "I am in the street" or "He is sad today", so it's very useful!
When you want to know where something or someone is, you use the verb estar in Portuguese.
For example, when someone asks you on the phone Onde você está? That means "Where are you?" in an informal way.
Let's break it down.
Onde means "Where"
And você, as you know, is the informal word for "you"
está is "are.” This is the “to be” verb estar conjugated for você.
All together it is Onde você está?
[slowly] Onde você está?
Answering this question is very easy! You just say Eu estou plus the place where you are.
Eu means “I” and
estou is that verb estar again, this time conjugated for Eu.
Then you add the place. So for example, you can say Eu estou no quarto which is "I am in the bedroom."
[slowly] Eu estou no quarto.
Now let’s see a few other possible answers with it:
"I am at the office" would be Eu estou no escritório.
"I am in a meeting" would be Eu estou numa reunião.
"I am in a store" would be Eu estou numa loja.
Brazilians often speak very fast and many times you will hear tá instead of está or tô instead of estou.
So, don’t be surprised if you hear Onde você tá? or Eu tô no quarto.
Another very useful question you may be asked is Cadê você? It has the same meaning as Onde você está? Cadê comes from que é de, or “what is of”, but it is the equivalent of “where are” in English.
Now it’s time for Paloma’s Point.
You can use this convenient verb if you are lost in the street for example Eu estou perdido, você poderia me ajudar, por favor?
This means “I am lost, can you help me please?”
[slow] Eu estou perdido, você poderia me ajudar, por favor?
In this lesson we learned how to talk about your location thanks to the verb estar. Next time we’ll learn how to talk about age using the verb ter, which is "to have" in Portuguese. So do you want to know how to ask somebody’s age? I’ll be waiting for you in the next Português em Três Minutos lesson.
Tchau, até a próxima!
