Hello everyone, this is Jade Furuta and welcome to Portuguese weekly words. Today’s theme is bugs. Umm
Aranha “spider.” The first thing that came into my mind was Spiderman. So Spiderman in Portuguese is Homem-Aranha. Homem, of course, it means man.
Meu primo adora o Homem-Aranha.
My cousin loves Spiderman.
Oh I don’t like this one: barata it has two meanings actually.
barata means “cockroach” but it also means “cheap.”
Eu odeio barata, é nojento.
That means, “I hate cockroach, it’s disgusting.”
Essa blusa foi muito barata.
That means, “This blouse was very cheap.“
formiga, that means “ant.” Well I just remembered. Actually this week, I was talking to my Canadian friend and I called him, you are such a little ant and he couldn’t really understand it. So I had to explain to him that in Brazil, when a person has a sweet tooth, you can call him or her, you are such a little ant:
Você é uma formiguinha!
You are a little ant!
He is like ah… okay.
mosca “fly”
Olha! Tem uma mosca ali!
olha means “look” “There is a fly right there!”
I was living in the 28th floor and they would still get there. I think it took the elevator just to visit me
Joaninha oh I like this word, it’s so cute. I remember when I was in kindergarten in Brazil when we were always trying to find those because they are so pretty. Ladybug, ladybug joaninha. “Ninha” is actually a cute way of calling people and things.
Essa joaninha é tão bonitinha!
This ladybug is such a cutie!
Acabou! This is all for today’s Portuguese weekly words. I hope you enjoyed yourself and see you next time. Beijo, tchau tchau!
