Olá, PortuguesePod101 listeners! Is dinner a popular date idea in your country? If not, where else do people like to go on dates? Let us know by leaving a post!

Olá, Rejean!

Irã is masculine. Although it ends with a letter A, it's masculine. Sometimes the rules have exceptions and this case is one.

We even have Irã or Iran as man's proper names here in Brazil.

Observe this curiosity:

Some countries that end with A and accent are related as masculine: o Irã, o Canadá.

most of the countries ending with A are referred to as feminine: a Colômbia, a França.

Sincerely,

Marcia

Irã é um país masculino ou feminino? De acordo com a aula de hoje, seria feminino, mas não sei o porquê mas pensava que Irã é masculino.

Hello Jaimie,

Thank you for your message.

We use:

"Equador" in Portuguese for "Ecuador";

"Nós fomos surfar." in Portuguese for "We went surfing."

In case of any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.👍

No Ecuador é normal ir tomar uma bebida ou dançar para um encontro. Para meu primeiro encontro com meu esposo fuimos surfar na praia.

Olá Richard,

Thank you for posting.

In this case, the verb "to be" in Portuguese will correspond to "ser" (instead of "estar":

Vai ser uma surpresa.

It will be a surprise.

"Estar" is used to describe the condition of something or someone at the moment (feeling, emotions, etc.) and would not be applicable in this case.

Please check out this grammar point with the detailed explanation about Ser e Estar / "To be" verbs:

https://www.portuguesepod101.com/learningcenter/reference/grammar/22?

As for "O que vamos fazer agora?" ("What are we going to do now?") the example in the dialogue is more used.

Another way to express that kind of idea is "O que faremos (____)?" ("What will we do (_____)?"), but would be used to express future situations and would sound more formal, for example: "O que faremos amanhã cedo?" ("What will we do tomorrow morning?").

Should you have any further questions, please let us know.

Sincerely,

Cristiane

Oi Makiko,

É verdade, não é certo escrever assim. Mas nós também queremos que os nossos alunos entendam como é a pronúncia usada no dia-a-dia no Brasil, por isso algumas aulas têm abreviação.

Mas concordo com a sua professora, é muito importante aprender a escrita correta.

Nos avise se tiver qualquer dúvida!

Minha professora de Português fica chateada quando pessoas usam abreviadas tal como 'tô' (estou) e 'tá' (esta). Ela acha que eles estão incorretas por escrito ou em uma conversa.

Oi Dan,

Thanks for the comment!

Yes, some restaurants have huge portions, that you can split between 2 or sometimes even more people!

I think many people try to maintain their weight by having light meals. But then, once in a while they go to churrascarias or huge portions restaurants, don't you think?

What do you usually have for dinner?
