E aí gente, eu sou Paloma, tudo bom? Welcome to Top Portuguese Words! Today’s topic is Top 10 Phrases for Surviving Back to School, volta às aulas, yeah the most dreaded time for kids. In Brazil, the back-to-school time is in February and also in August after vacation time.
1. mochila “backpack”
Este ano quero comprar uma mochila nova pra escola.
“I want to buy a new backpack this year for school.”
Many kids carry very heavy mochillas to school because they have to carry all the books, notebooks and papers and whatever the school asks. And usually, schools don’t have a locker in Brazil so you just need to bring everything on your own backpack.
2. lanche “snack”
Eu sempre trago lanche de casa. É mais saudável.
“I always bring a snack from home. It's healthier.”
The snack time or recess in Brazil, we call it recreio but if you are a little older, you don’t want to see recreio. That sounds kind of childish so you can say intervalo.
3. lição de casa “homework”
Gosto de fazer a lição de casa antes do jantar.
“I like to do my homework before dinner.”
Yeah, especially if you’re doing Portuguese homework, you should do it just right after your class okay so you’d still remember everything that you learned. There are many ways to say “homework” in Portuguese. You can say lição de casa but there is also dever de casa or tarefa. The three words are correct so just use the one that you prefer or the one that your teacher uses.
4. prova “exam”
Preciso estudar bastante. Semana que vem é semana de prova!
“I have to study a lot. Next week is exam week!”
It’s very common to say semana de prova or exam week in Brazil. You can also say exame, but it really means exam, but at school, it’s more common to say prova or proof, you know, proof that you know everything that your teacher told you.
“Are you prepared for a Portuguese exam?” “Você está preparado para uma prova de português?”
5. férias “vacations”
Você vai viajar nestas férias? “Will you travel this vacation?”
Férias is a long period of vacation time. For example, summer vacations or winter vacations, but if you want to say only a holiday, it’s called feriado. So you have férias and feriado.
6. escola “school”
Minha escola é bem pertinho de casa. “My school is very near my house.”
In Brazil, we have public and private schools, escola público and escola privada or escola particular.
7. estudar “to study”
Adoro estudar português. É a minha matéria preferida.
“I love to study Portuguese. It's my favorite subject.”
If you’re a foreigner learning Portuguese, maybe it will be your favorite subject, but in Brazil escola, I don’t think Portuguese is the favorite subject of many people because our grammar like the conjugations and everything, it’s so confusing that even for us, it’s hard and it’s boring to learn all that stuff.
8. É o primeiro dia de aula. “It's the first day of class.”
É o primeiro dia de aula e já cheguei atrasada. Preciso acordar mais cedo da próxima vez.
“It's the first day of class and I'm already late. I need to wake up earlier next time.”
It’s not good right? It’s your first day of class. You shouldn’t be late. Yeah, so make sure to arrive at the correct time, ok, for your Portuguese lesson.
9. Estamos na mesma classe! “We're in the same class!”
Lilian, que legal! Estamos na mesma classe este ano!
“Lilian, that's great! We're in the same class this year!”
Especially big schools, they have a lot of classes for the same school year so you can ask your friends, Qual classe você tá? “Which class are you in?” He may answer, Na mesma que a sua. “In the same as you.”
10. professor “teacher”
Esta professora de português é ótima. Quero continuar estudando com ela ano que vem.
“This Portuguese teacher is great. I want to continue studying with her next year.”
Remember that you can say professor for male, and professora for female. You use it to mean teacher and also professor, for example, at university, professor we also say professor.
Okay, that’s it for today. Thanks a lot for watching! Let us know in the comments what do you hate or love about going back to school. See you next time! Tchau tchau!
