Eric: Welcome to 3-Minute Portuguese Season 1, Lesson 13 - Who Is It? In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask who someone is in Portuguese.
Body
Eric: Here's the way to ask 'Who is it?' in Portuguese.
Ana: [Normal] Quem é?
Eric: First is a word meaning 'who'
Ana: [Normal] quem [Slow] quem
Eric: Last is the word meaning 'is'
Ana: [Normal] é [Slow] é
Eric: Note the rising intonation. Listen again to the question meaning 'Who is it?'
Ana: [Slow] Quem é? [Normal] Quem é?
Eric: Now, imagine you just saw a stranger. Here's the way to say, 'Who is he?'
Ana: [Normal] Quem é ele?
Eric: First is a word meaning 'who'
Ana: [Normal] quem [Slow] quem
Eric: Next is the word meaning 'is'
Ana: [Normal] é [Slow] é
Eric: Last is the word meaning 'he'
Ana: [Normal] ele [Slow] ele
Eric: Note again the rising intonation. Listen again to the question meaning 'Who is he?'
Ana: [Slow] Quem é ele? [Normal] Quem é ele?
Eric: Here's a response meaning 'It's me.'
Ana: [Normal] Sou eu.
Eric: First is a word meaning 'am'
Ana: [Normal] sou [Slow] sou
Eric: Last is the word meaning 'I'
Ana: [Normal] eu [Slow] eu
Eric: Listen again to the response, 'It's me.'
Ana: [Slow] Sou eu. [Normal] Sou eu.
Eric: Here's a response meaning, 'That’s my friend.'
Ana: [Normal] É o meu amigo.
Eric: First is a word meaning 'is'
Ana: [Normal] é [Slow] é
Eric: Next is the word meaning 'the'
Ana: [Normal] o [Slow] o
Eric: Next is the word meaning 'my'
Ana: [Normal] meu [Slow] meu
Eric: Last is the word meaning 'friend'
Ana: [Normal] amigo [Slow] amigo
Eric: Listen again to the response, 'That’s my friend.'
Ana: [Slow] É o meu amigo. [Normal] É o meu amigo.

Eric: Now it's time for a quick cultural insight.
Ana: When speaking on the phone, you may ask Quem está falando? meaning “Who is speaking?” The answer should be something like É a Ana or "It's Ana."

Eu tenho meu irmão comigo = I have my brother with me.


Eu tenho meu irmão ao meu lado = I have my brother next to me/near me.
