INTRODUCTION
In the previous lesson, we covered how to get on the subway. In Portugal, a comfortable way to travel over long distances is to take a train, which in Portuguese is comboio. Trains are convenient and often cheaper than buses, and they also let you see a bit of the countryside between cities, not just the other side of a motorway.
GRAMMAR POINT
You’ll ask for comboio tickets at a ticket office.
Let’s say you want to go to Lisbon.
“One ticket to Lisbon, please” in Portuguese is
Um bilhete para Lisboa, por favor.
Let’s break it down:
(slow) Um bi-lhe-te pa-ra Lis-bo-a, por fa-vor.
Once more:
Um bilhete para Lisboa, por favor.
In case you’re not traveling on your own, and have company, you will need to ask for two or more tickets.
“Two tickets to Lisbon, please,” is
Dois bilhetes para Lisboa, por favor.
(slow) Do-is bi-lhe-tes pa-ra Lis-bo-a, por fa-vor.
Dois bilhetes para Lisboa, por favor.
As you can see, instead of bilhete, we say the plural bilhetes.
Normally, when you ask for a train ticket, you will be given a second class one, so we will teach you how to specify what type of ticket you need.
For a First Class ticket say,
Um bilhete de primeira classe, por favor. which means “One first class ticket please.”
(slow) Um bi-lhe-te de pri-mei-ra clas-se, por fa-vor.
Um bilhete de primeira classe, por favor.
de means “of”.
And primeira classe is translated as “first class”.
Then we have primeira translated as “first”.
(slow) Pri-mei-ra.
Primeira.
Classe means “class”
(slow) Clas-se.
Classe.
Let’s hear the whole phrase one more time:
Um bilhete de primeira classe, por favor.
If you want to add your destination, in this case Lisbon, your phrase will sound like this:
Um bilhete de primeira classe para Lisboa, por favor.
(slow) Um bi-lhe-te de pri-mei-ra cla-sse pa-ra Lis-bo-a, por fa-vor.
Um bilhete de primeira classe para Lisboa, por favor.
Here you just have to add para Lisboa, or “to Lisbon” in English
(slow) pa-ra Lis-bo-a
para Lisboa
In the case that a second class ticket is what you need, all you have to do is replace primeira classe with segunda classe. So “One second class ticket please” will sound like this:
Um bilhete de segunda classe, por favor.
(slow) Um bi-lhe-te de se-gun-da clas-se, por fa-vor.
segunda classe means “second class”
(slow) se-gun-da clas-se
segunda classe
Let’s hear both phrases one more time so you can compare them easily.
Um bilhete de primeira classe, por favor.
Um bi-lhe-te de pri-mei-ra cla-sse, por fa-vor.
Um bilhete de segunda classe, por favor.
Um bi-lhe-te de se-gun-da cla-sse, por fa-vor.
