Braden: Hello, and welcome back to the PortuguesePOD101.com , the fastest, easiest and most fun way to learn Portuguese! I'm joined in the studio by...
Thássia: Hello everyone. Thássia here.
Thássia: So Braden, please tell us what we will be learning in this lesson.
Braden: In this lesson, you'll be learning how to conjugate regular -ir verbs to the present subjunctive.
Thássia: Where does this conversation take place and who is it between?
Braden: This conversation takes place in the morning in the boss's office and it's between the boss and an employee.
Thássia: What's the formality level?
Braden: Well, there is a power relationship going on here so the boss is speaking a bit more casually but the employee is extremely respectful.
Thássia: Let's listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
Augusto: Bom dia!
Marco: Bom dia Sr. Augusto!
Augusto: Esta é a sua proposta?
Marco: Sim, senhor.
Augusto: Você sabe que se a sua proposta tiver qualquer falha a vaga será do concorrente, não sabe?
Marco: Sei sim, senhor. (bem seguro) Mas o projeto foi muito bem pensado, não terá erros.
(barulho de páginas passando)
Augusto: hum.. de acordo com seu orçamento, se investirmos em energia solar os lucros cairão.
Marco: Se o senhor observar a página seguinte verá que os custos já estão incluídos no orçamento inicial.
Augusto: Mas se eu fizer isso, o investimento será exorbitante.
Marco: Se o senhor prestar especial atenção na próxima página, verá que o seu investimento será muito pequeno senhor e que já está tudo dentro da verba que o senhor mesmo nos disponibilizou.
Augusto: Ok... Excelente trabalho. Parabéns! Seu projeto foi aceito! (num tom de aprovação) Eu quero que você trabalhe conosco e espero que já se sinta em casa.
Marco: Muito obrigado, senhor.

Braden: You know that if your proposal has any error, the position will go to your competitor, right?

Braden: hum... According to your budget, if we invest in solar energy profit will fall.
Marco: Se o senhor observar a página seguinte verá que os custos já estão incluídos no orçamento inicial.
Braden: If you'll observe the next page, you'll see that the costs have already been included in the initial budget.
Augusto: Mas se eu fizer isso, o investimento será exorbitante.
Braden: But if we do that, our investment will be exorbitant.
Marco: Se o senhor prestar especial atenção na próxima página, verá que o seu investimento será muito pequeno senhor e que já está tudo dentro da verba que o senhor mesmo nos disponibilizou.
Braden: If you'll pay special attention on the next page, you'll see that your investment will be very small, sir, and that it is already within the amount that you, sir, appropriated for us.
Augusto: Ok... Excelente trabalho. Parabéns! Seu projeto foi aceito! (num tom de aprovação) Eu quero que você trabalhe conosco e espero que já se sinta em casa.
Braden: Okay... Excellent work. Congratulations! Your project was accepted. (in a tone of approval) I want you to work with us and hope that you already feel at home.
Marco: Muito obrigado, senhor.
Braden: Thank you very much, sir.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Thássia: Brazilian society pulls heavily from European society, particularly the aspect of being male-centric.
Braden: Family and business decisions are focused on and made by men and there’s no questioning.
Thássia: Many Brazilians refuse to accept this social model and this top down approach is dying out but there are many places where the “leader” controls everything.
Braden: In the dialogue, Augusto is the symbol of that societal structure. He is the boss, he can treat anyone “below” him any way he likes and all decisions are his.
Thássia: Notice that he was antagonistic in the beginning and didn’t apologize. Toward the end, once he was satisfied that the details had been worked out properly, he made the decision.
Braden: No board of directors, no consulting with any one. Just a prompt, “Seu projeto foi aceito.” and a quaint welcome.
Thássia: Marco on the other had, was extremely polite and subordinate because he knows how this works. An easy way to tell is the frequent interjection with the word “senhor.”
Braden: If there is even the slightest thing that the “boss” doesn’t like about him, even if all the numbers are perfect, it’s culturally plausible that Augusto will reject the proposal and Marco will be out of work.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Braden: Let's have a closer look at the usuage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Thássia: THe first phrase we’ll look at is “muito bem pensado” Muito bem pensado means “very well thought out.”
Braden: In the dialogue, we saw Marco saying Mas o projeto foi muito bem pensado which we translated as “But the project was very well thought out.”
Thássia: The next phrase we’ll look at is “de acordo com”. De acordo com means and works the same as “according to.”
Braden: For example, the sentence de acordo com o livro... means “acording to the book...” or the sentence de acordo com a previsão do tempo, vai chover amanhã that means “according to the weather forecast, it will rain tomorrow.”
Thássia: Next we’ll look at is especial atenção. Here the word order was inverted to emphasize the meaning of the words. Especial means “special” or “especial” and atenção means “attention.” So, especial atenção means “special attention.”
Braden: last we’ll look at “Sinta-se em casa” – Sinta-se em casa literally means to “feel yourself at home.” You will often hear Sinta-se em casa when you get to a place and the host wants to welcome you.
Thássia: The idea is to make you feel as comfortable as if you were at your own home. In the dialog, Sinta-se em casa was used to welcome the new employee in the sentence espero que já se sinta em casa, which we translated as “I hope that you already feel at home.”

Lesson focus
Braden: So what are we looking at today Thássia?
Thássia: The focus of this lesson is present subjunctive of regular verbs.
Braden: In the dialogue we heard the phrase
Thássia: “Eu quero que você trabalhe conosco!” which we translated as
Braden: "I want you to work with us!” this in an example of the subjunctive of regular verbs in Portuguese.
Thássia: The present subjunctive of most verbs in Portuguese is formed by dropping the so from the first person singular (the “I” form) and adding the opposite ending.
Braden: That means for the -ar verbs you put on what would normally be -er endings and for the -er and -ir verbs you put on what would normally be -ar endings
Thássia: some exapmles would be ---

Braden: We have a great table that has all the present subjunctive conjugations for -ar, -er, and -ir verbs in the PDF so be sure to check that out.
Thássia: Note how a “criss-cross” rule applies - -e, -e, -emos, -em, are the present subjunctive endings for -ar verbs; -a, -a, -amos, -am, are the present subjunctive endings for -er and -ir verbs.
Braden: So we have three sample sentences to go over here.
Thássia: Okay. Quero que ele cante. - “I want him to sing.” cantar is an -ar verb that has been conjugated to the present subjunctive. notice how these are similar to the command form conjugations.
Braden: another sentence would be Insisto que eles comam. – “I insist that they eat.”
Thássia: and Meu pai não quer que eu fale contigo. – “My father doesn’t want me to talk to you.”
