Lesson focus

In today's lesson, we'll introduce you to some useful phrases if you need medical assistance. When traveling, sometimes the body takes a little time to adjust, and the immune system is no different. So today, we'll go over some phrases that will help get you to a location where you can get medical assistance. We'll start with the phrase "I need a doctor."
In Portuguese, "I need a doctor." is Preciso de um médico. Preciso de um médico.
Let's break it down by syllable: Pre-ci-so de um mé-di-co.
Now, let's hear it once again, Preciso de um médico.
The first word Preciso means "I need."
Let's break down this word and hear it one more time: Pre-ci-so, and Preciso.
This is followed by De, which in Portuguese is "of".
De.
De.
Next, we have Um, which means "one" or "a."
Um.
Um.
So, to recap here, we have Preciso de um. Literally, this means "I need of a."
Let's take a look at the next word, Médico, which means "doctor."
Let's break down this word: Mé-di-co.
And one time fast, Médico.
So all together, we have Preciso de um médico. Literally, this means "I need a doctor."
Now, if you need to get there or would like someone to take you, you can use the following phrase: "Please, could you take me to the doctor?" which is Por favor, você poderia me levar até o médico. Por favor, você poderia me levar até o médico.
Let's break it down by syllable: Por fa-vor, vo-cê po-de-ri-a me le-var a-té o mé-di-co.
Now, let's here is it once again, Por favor, você poderia me levar até o médico.
The first phrase is our request phrase Por favor, você poderia which means "Please, could you…" Por favor, você poderia.
The next word is Me which means "me."
Me.
Me.
This is followed by Levar, which in Portuguese is "take." Levar.
Le-var.
Levar.
So to recap here, we have Por favor, você poderia me levar.
Literally, this means "Please, could you take me?"
Let's take a look at the next word Até, which means "until" or "to." Até.
A-té.
Até.
Next, we have O médico, which means "the doctor." This is actually two words but they should be learned together. O médico. O médico.
O mé-di-co.
O médico.
So all together, we have Por favor você poderia me levar até o médico?
Literally, this means "Please, could you take me to the doctor?"
And of course, for "the pharmacy," you can just substitute the word for "pharmacy" and get Por favor, você poderia me levar até a farmácia? which is "Please, could you take me to the pharmacy?"
Let's hear that again, Por favor, você poderia me levar até a farmácia?
And slowly, Por fa-vor, vo-cê po-de-ri-a me le-var a-té a far-má-ci-a?
And one time fast, Por favor, você poderia me levar até a farmácia?
Cultural Insights
People in Brazil are very caring and will completely interrupt their entire day to help one another. So, if you find yourself in need of a hospital, don't be afraid to ask the people on the street. And don't be surprised if they drop everything and come to help you or even take you to the hospital themselves.
