Lesson focus

In today's lesson, you'll learn how to tell someone where you are from plus how to tell them your name.
In Portuguese, "I'm from the United States." is Sou dos Estados Unidos.
Sou dos Estados Unidos.
Let's break it down by syllable: Sou dos Es-ta-dos U-ni-dos.
Now, let's hear it once again, Sou dos Estados Unidos.
The first word Sou means "I am."
Let's say this slowly, Sou.
And one time fast, Sou.
Next, we have Dos, which means from "the."
Dos.
Dos.
This is followed by Estados, which means "states."
Let's breakdown this word and hear it one more time:
es-ta-dos,
and estados
The last word is Unidos, which in English is "united." Unidos.
U-ni-dos.
Unidos.
So all together, we have Sou dos Estados Unidos. Literally, this means "I'm from the United States."
In Portuguese, "My name is Luciane." is Meu nome é Luciane.
Meu nome é Luciane.
Let's break it down by syllable: Meu no-me é Lu-ci-a-ne.
Now, let's hear it once again, Meu nome é Luciane.
The first word Meu means "my."
Let's breakdown this word and hear it one more time:
meu,
and meu
This is followed by Nome, which in Portuguese is "name." Nome.
No-me.
Nome.
So to recap here, we have Meu nome. Literally, this means "my name."
Let's take a look at the next word, é which means "is."
é
é
The last word is my name, Luciane.
Lu-ci-a-ne, and Luciane.
So all together, we have Meu nome é Luciane. Literally, this means "My name is Luciane."
Cultural Insights
A quick tip about the first phrase is that you probably don't want to directly say, "I'm American." because some people in Brazil consider themselves Americans as well because they are also from the Americas. That's why you should learn to say, Sou dos Estados Unidos. It's a very neutral way to tell others where you are from.

Outro

Okay, to close out this lesson, we'd like you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for saying it aloud. You have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so boa sorte!
