Lesson focus

In today's lesson, we’ll introduce some more useful phrases for hotels and the like.
The first phrase is "What time do I need to check out?" which in Portuguese is Que horas preciso deixar o quarto?
Que horas preciso deixar o quarto?
Let's break it down by syllable: Que ho-ras pre-ci-so dei-xar o quar-to?
Now, let's hear it once again: Que horas preciso deixar o quarto?
The first word que means "what."
que
que
The next word is horas, which means "hours."
horas
ho-ras
horas
The next word is preciso. Preciso means "I need."
Let's break down this word and hear it one more time: pre-ci-so
And preciso
So to recap here, we have que horas preciso. Literally, this means "what time do I need."
This is followed by deixar, which, in English, is "leave."
deixar
dei-xar
And deixar
Let's take a look at the next term o quarto. This is actually two words, o and quarto, that mean "the" and "room," respectively.
o quarto
o quar-to
And o quarto
So all together, we have Que horas preciso deixar o quarto? Literally, this means "What time do I need to leave the room?" or "What time do I need to check out?"
It is probable that at least once, you'll need some more of certain items.
Let’s try towels. Towels in Portuguese is toalhas.
to-al-has
toalhas
So the phrase, "Please, could you bring me some more towels?" is Por favor, você poderia trazer mais algumas toalhas?
Por fa-vor, vo-cê po-de-ri-a tra-zer ma-is al-gu-mas toalhas?
So we have our base request phrase Por favor, você poderia, then, you just add on what you are requesting, trazer mais algumas toalhas.
Let's break this down and hear it once again: trazer mais algumas toalhas
And trazer mais algumas toalhas
The first word is trazer, and it means "bring."
trazer
tra-zer
trazer
Then, we have mais, which means "more."
mais
ma-is
mais
Next, we have algumas, which, in English, means "some."
algumas
al-gu-mas
algumas
And the last word we have is toalhas, which as we learned before means "towels."
toalhas
To review, we have trazer mais algumas toalhas, which literally means "bring some more towels." And altogether, we add on our request phrase and get Por favor, você poderia trazer mais algumas toalhas? Literally, this means "Please, could you bring me some more towels?"
If you want something different, the only thing that changes is the thing you are looking for. Here are a few more words that might come in handy:
"Toothbrush"
escova de dentes
es-co-va de den-tes
escova de dentes
"Toothpaste"
pasta de dentes
pas-ta de den-tes
pasta de dentes
"Shampoo" is almost the same
xampu
xam-pu
xampu
"Soap"
sabonete
sa-bo-ne-te
sabonete
And that's it. Just remember to always, always be courteous and kind, and smile a lot too. Brazilians love it when you smile.

Outro

Okay. To close out today's lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase, and you're responsible for saying it aloud. You'll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so boa sorte!
