Lesson Transcript

Oi, meu nome é Paloma. Hi everybody! I’m Paloma.
Welcome to PortuguesePod101.com’s “Português em Três Minutos”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Portuguese.
In the last lesson we learned how to count reais. Did you practice at home?
In this lesson, we're going to learn other useful tips to talk about your schedule - for example, if a friend asks you "What are you doing this weekend?"
Let’s start!
To ask someone you already know or a friend, you say:
O que você vai fazer nesse fim de semana?
[slowly] O que você vai fazer nesse fim de semana?
Let’s break it down.
O que is "what".
você is the informal way to say “you.”
vai fazer is “will do" if you’re referring to “você”.
And nesse fim de semana is "in this weekend"
“What are you doing this weekend?”
If you want to ask the same question in a more formal way, you just need to replace você with o senhor or a senhora. The verb stays the same.
O que o senhor vai fazer nesse fim de semana?
O que a senhora vai fazer nesse fim de semana?
What if you’re not asking about this weekend?
Asking about a different time period is as easy as replacing nesse fim de semana.
Tomorrow is amanhã. So you can also say O que você vai fazer amanhã?
What are you doing tomorrow? Or, you could also put in a weekday, like na segunda-feira, "on Monday" or no domingo, which is "on Sunday".
O que você vai fazer na segunda-feira?
O que você vai fazer no domingo?
So now, if someone asks *you* O que você vai fazer amanhã?, or "What are you doing tomorrow?", how can you answer?
Here's an example: Eu vou trabalhar. "I'm going to work." Eu vou means "I will" and trabalhar means "to work". Feel free to replace "trabalhar" with any other verb, such as fazer!
Eu vou fazer compras. “I will go shopping.”
[slowly] Eu vou trabalhar
[slowly] Eu vou fazer compras.
Now it’s time for Paloma’s Point.
Brazilians are very lively people, so we usually have to do something on the weekends. It is normally a last minute plan, and it can be as simple as a churrasco, the Brazilian barbecue, or to watch a soccer match in some one's house.
Many families in Brazil still continue with the Sunday lunch tradition, the time when the all the members of the family meet and eat together.
In this lesson we learned how to talk about your schedule. Next time we are going to learn how to use the verb ser "to be". We'll also talk about how to tell people your nationality.
I'll be waiting for you in the next Português em Três minutos lesson.
Até mais!
